Marketing Strategies - Foo Fighters

The Foo fighters are an alternative rock band originally formed in 1994 by the Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, as an independent project following the dissolution of his previous band; Dave named the band after UFOs and various outer space phenomenons. This had attracted many peoples attention due to the unusual name and unorthodox style the band and portrayed.

The Foo Fighters first album release was called ‘Foo Fighters’, there promotional strategy was to publicise themselves and the entire line-up appeared in the ‘Liner Notes’. As the album was released the band toured Europe to promote the album and during the tour they played in several of the largest network televisions. However after all these global promotions, no music video was ever made for the singles within the album, later in 2011, there first music video was produced for the single Walk, in the album, Wasting Lights.

As the Foo Fighters don’t seem particularly interested in “fighting piracy.” And that view may actually be helping them. Leaked albums are a great marketing strategy. For the people who get their hands on the leaked songs, they get a great feeling of inclusion by exclusivity. They have something that most other people don’t have, and this method interests their listeners and followers.
